Who We Are
About Us
Devoted to Christ, Dedicated to Students and Families.
Our independent school authority operates three fully accredited Christian school programs with a commitment to a Biblical standard of spiritual and academic excellence. We are also blessed to support home education families throughout the province of Alberta.
We believe parental responsibility for the education of their children is an inalienable right given to them by God. We also believe every child is made in the image of God with unique talents and needs. It is our privilege to provide educational choices to parents seeking an independently governed Christian option for the instructional needs of their family.
Koinonia (pronounced koy-no-NEE-uh) is an ancient Greek word meaning Christian fellowship with God and others who hold common beliefs. We invite you to explore our community and connect with us if your family is committed to discipleship-based Christian education to the glory of God.

Our school authority is supported in its mission by our membership with the Koinonia Christian Education Society (KCES) and the Association of Independent Schools and Colleges of Alberta (AISCA).
Our History
Since 1983, Koinonia Christian School Red Deer has offered quality Christian education for Red Deer and area families. Founding principal of the school, Mr. Vern Rand, started the campus school at Woodlea Pentecostal Church in Red Deer and faithfully led its growth until 2021. Today, the campus school serves approximately 200 students and is growing!

In 2015, Koinonia@Home programming was added to support parents seeking independently governed Christian options for their family, including Home Education, Distance Learning and Shared Responsibility programs.

Through the years the spirit and integrity of the board has remained constant. We provide a caring compassionate educational community for families where Christ's word is honored and faith in Jesus is discipled.
Why Does Christian Education Matter?
Our schools are established under the mission and vision of discipleship. We believe no disciple should be sent into the field until the disciple is fully prepared and equipped for their mission. Unified by our Statement of Faith, our parent board governs the mission of our school, our leadership guards and guides the culture of the community, and our teachers nurture love and respect for our God through learning and fellowship activities.

All life is worship (Romans 12: 1-2). A Christian education is transformational—developing the heart, mind, soul and body of students to prepare them for service in Christ's kingdom. Once they are prepared, they will be salt and light in the world.
Be holy as I am holy
(1 Peter 1:16)
Why Do Independent (Private) Schools Matter?
Alberta's history of choice is emphasized in the Choice in Education Act.

Independent (private) schools accommodate students with unique learning approaches, specific learning needs and respect for a family's faith and worldview. Teachers who serve in independent schools are certified with an Alberta government Teacher Quality Standard. Accredited independent schools offer the Alberta curriculum.
